Epidermal vs.Traditional Microneedling

Same instrument, different depths — and a world of difference in results, downtime, and who each treatment is truly designed for.

If you've been researching microneedling treatments, you've likely encountered both terms. Microneedling has been a clinical staple for years, celebrated for stimulating collagen and tackling everything from acne scars to lax skin. But epidermal needling — sometimes called superficial needling — has emerged as a distinct technique with its own unique applications, mechanism, and an ideal candidate to consider.


The fundamental difference between the two treatments comes down to one measurement: needle penetration depth. This single variable determines which layer of skin is being targeted, which biological processes are triggered, and what you can realistically expect to see in the mirror afterward.


The needle depth is adjusted by the practitioner based on skin concern, location, and tolerance.

Traditional microneedling uses needles that penetrate into the dermis — the deep layer of skin where collagen and elastin are found. This dermal wounding triggers the body's natural wound-healing cascade, stimulating new collagen production over weeks and months. Epidermal needling stays comparatively shallow, working primarily within the epidermis and just below the skin's surface barrier.


Traditional microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries in the dermis. These channels trigger the release of growth factors and initiate a healing response that produces new collagen and elastin matrix. Over a series of treatments (typically three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks

apart), this remodelling process can visibly improve deep wrinkles, atrophic acne scarring, enlarged pores, and significant skin laxity. Because needles penetrate into living dermal tissue, the treatment requires numbing cream, often produces visible pinpoint bleeding, and comes with a

recovery period of two to five days of redness and sensitivity. It's a clinically invasive procedure best performed by a trained aesthetician, nurse, or dermatologist.

Epidermal needling is performed with shorter needle cartridges, dermarollers or derma-stamping devices set at depths of 0,1 - 0,5mm targeting the uppermost layers of skin without triggering the deep wound-healing response. Instead, it works primarily by enhancing product absorption,

stimulating gentle cellular turnover, and improving the texture and luminosity of the epidermis itself. The microchannels created at this shallow depth allow active ingredients like serums, peptides, hyaluronic acid, and growth factors to penetrate far more effectively than topical application alone. The result is enhanced ingredient delivery, improved skin tone, fine line smoothing, and a general brightening effect — without significant downtime.


Choose Epidermal Needling if…You're dealing with dullness, uneven skin tone, mild surface texture, fine lines and want a lower-commitment, lower-downtime option. It's also ideal if

you have sensitive skin that may not tolerate deeper treatments well, or if you're looking to maximise the efficacy of your skincare investment — the enhanced absorption effect means your serums work dramatically harder post-treatment. It's a popular maintenance treatment between traditional microneedling sessions, and an excellent introduction for clients new to needling who are apprehensive about more invasive procedures.

Choose Traditional Microneedling If…your concerns are structural: deep acne scarring, significant skin laxity, deeper wrinkles, enlarged pores, or stretch marks. These issues originate in the dermis, and only dermal-reaching treatments can meaningfully address them. Traditional microneedling's collagen-induction effect is clinicallyproven, with visible improvements typically emerging four to six weeks after a course of treatments as new collagen matures.

Regardless of depth, the period immediately following any needling treatment is critical. Freshly needled skin is highly permeable — meaning whatever you apply will penetrate deeply. This is a powerful advantage when using beneficial actives, but it equally means irritants, fragrances, retinoids, and acids can cause significant sensitisation. Both treatments call for careful homecare immediately post-treatment, strict SPF use, and a pause on actives for at least 24–48 hours. With traditional microneedling, the recovery window extends further: avoid exercise, heat exposure, and anything that causes sweating or flushing for 24–48 hours, as open microchannels create risk of bacterial introduction.

The Bottom Line is epidermal needling and traditional microneedling aren't competitors —they're complementary tools on a spectrum, each excellent at what it's designed to do.
